Martha Stewart suggests using your husband's clean t-shirt when cooking a turkey

Celebrity chef Martha Stewart has suggested a unique item not usually found in the kitchen to help with cooking the perfect turkey.

With Thanksgiving occurring this week in the United States — alongside the resulting Black Friday-Cyber Monday sales worldwide — and Christmas just around the corner, the lifestyle mogul appeared on Today to impart some wisdom on how to prepare the perfect meal. Watch above.

During the show's 'Thanksgiving '21 Together Again' segment, 21 chefs offered tips and tricks for cooking the show-stopping meal, with some including ingredients or items that can be substituted should you be short on the big day.

"If you don't have a cheesecloth for my turkey 101, and you must cover the turkey with a cheesecloth, make sure you go into your husband's clean t-shirt drawer," Stewart advised viewers as she demonstrated the process with a clean white t-shirt in a pan.

"And you get a t-shirt, like that, and you soak that in the butter and white wine and then you drape that over the bird."

Stewart, who said she will be cooking for her family at Thanksgiving this year, confirmed the t-shirt hack works "almost as well" as an actual cheesecloth, but laughed as she added a word of warning: "Your husband might get mad at you."

Although cheesecloths are used traditionally for making cheese, they do have other uses around the house and in the kitchen.

For cooking turkeys specifically, a cheesecloth is ideal for those who prefer not to get the bird out of the oven to baste it every half an hour.

Stewart showed the thin cotton cloth — cheesecloth or t-shirt — soaking in melted butter and white wine, and then being placed over the turkey breast.

Cheesecloths — or t-shirts — also prevent the top skin from burning and slows down the cooking process of the turkey breast, allowing for flavour-filled succulence.
