From cream cheese to hummus, the butter board trend has spread right out

The butter board trend is really pretty. It's a chance to show off your artistic skills and make things look picture-ready with very little fuss.

It's also the trendiest way to serve butter right now, but the trend is spreading (pun absolutely intended) and moving far beyond butter into smooshing just about anything on a board to spread out and decorate.

But it's not just about looking pretty. It can actually be quite an economical way to serve up a dips, cheeses and even desserts, because far less of what you need will go a long way when you spread it all out on a board.

Instead of three or four cheeses on a board with a variety of crackers, you'll only need one or two, spread out beautifully, and some tough bread that can scoop it up. It's actually a very pretty way to be quite economical.

More than that, smashing and smooshing anything that works onto a plate or board in painterly strokes and with sprinkles of crushed nuts on top can be a great artistic outlet.

It's a trend worth trying for sure, and I dropped into Today Extra to show hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys how it's done.
