As budgets bite, this simple dinner is back – but which supermarket burger patty is best?

If all those Oscar after-party photos have you craving an In-N-Out burger, consider this your sign to DIY it for less.

It's been revealed which supermarket patties are worth a spot in your bun, with consumer group CHOICE putting 14 options from Coles, Woolworths and Aldi to the test.

The blind tasting assessed each product on flavour, texture, aroma and appearance - and one option emerged as a clear winner.

Coles' Finest Coarse Ground Angus Burgers took out the top gong, scoring 77 per cent.

"The judges praised these beef patties for their balanced, mild beef flavour and pleasant aroma," CHOICE Editorial Director Mark Serrels said.

The premium option, priced at a whopping $9 for a 300g pack, was also the most expensive per kilogram in the test.

Coming in second were Woolworths' Chuck & Brisket Quarter Pound Beef Burgers, which received a score of 70 per cent.

Judges noted the patties had visible mince strands and a well-balanced seasoning, with a nice beefy flavour once cooked.

CHOICE recommends choosing patties with an expert rating of 70 per cent or higher.

The results also pointed to a broader trend, with fresh patties generally outperforming frozen options in the test.

While some cheaper products still held their own, Serrels said there was a noticeable link between price and performance this time around.

"CHOICE tests sometimes reveal that price is not always an indicator of performance, but in this taste test, there was some correlation," he said.

"I would advise shoppers to avoid the three frozen varieties in our test, which were also the cheapest products we included, and stick to the fresh options."

And when it comes to supermarket meat more broadly, shoppers appear to have clear favourites.

Aldi was recognised as a standout performer in Canstar Blue's annual customer satisfaction awards, taking out four of six meat categories including chicken, lamb, fish and seafood.

Costco was rated highest for beef and pork, with both retailers named Most Satisfied Customers Award winners for supermarket meat.

The survey of more than 3000 shoppers ranked supermarkets on taste, freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction.

Despite Aldi's strong performance, Woolworths and Coles continue to dominate, accounting for around 38 per cent and 29 per cent of market share respectively, according to the ACCC.

Aldi holds roughly nine per cent, while Metcash - which supplies independent retailers such as IGA - accounts for about seven per cent. Costco sits at around four per cent.

Even so, Aldi continues to build a loyal customer base, with shoppers consistently rating the retailer highly for value and quality.
