Choice experts have uncovered the best hot chips in Australia

The hot chip is a staple snack, some would even argue the best form in which to eat a potato.

And while it's too expensive to be ordering a fresh pack of hot chips every day, what is much more achievable is to buy a bag of frozen chips and have them ready to pop into the air fryer whenever you so please.

But once you reach the freezer section of the grocery store, it an quickly become overwhelming with the amount of choice there is.

Not only are there several different forms of frozen chips (French fries, beer battered, etc.), there are also multiple brands producing each kind.

But thanks to Choice, we finally have a solution.

Choice has tested 34 different types of frozen chips from Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and IGA to see how they measure up when compared to one another.

"With the cooler months coming, the classic oven chip is the perfect snack to keep you warm and toasty," said Choice editorial director Mark Serrels.

"There's an overwhelming number of products available, so we've tested over 30 frozen chips, cooking them up in an air fryer, to see which ones are a must-try."

The expert judges blind tasted each chip product and gave a Choice Expert Rating, determined by assessing appearance, aroma, flavour, and texture. These were the results.

Best straight cut chip

If you're a traditionalist you're probably looking for the traditional, straight cut chip. No funny business, these chips cut straight to the chase.

Birds Eye Golden Crunch Thin and Crispy Chips took the crown in this category, with a 88 per cent Choice Expert Rating from the judges.

At $5.80 for a 900g packet, this is what Serrels had to say, "Our expert judges praised them for their golden colour and crispy and fluffy texture."

Best crinkle cut chip

Birds Eye Golden Crunch Crinkle Cut Chips are the ones recommended for those who like the tate of a traditional hot chip just wth a touch more pizzazz.

Serrels says these ones were scored well for their "crunchiness and slightly salty flavour."

They received a Choice Expert Rating of 85 per cent, and come in at $5.80 for a 900g packet.

Best shoestring chip

Shoestring fries are for those who like the crunch of a hot chip more than the mushy potato inside.

The winner for this category was Woolworths Essentials French Fries with a Choice Expert Rating of 66 per cent.

They were praised by judges for their "crispness, appealing colour and strong potato taste," and cost $4 for a 1kg packet.

Best beer battered chip

Woolworths has taken the crown again for what is arguably the most popular kind of chip in Australia.

At $4.60 for a 750g packet, Woolworths Australian Beer Batter Steakhouse Chips received a 76 per cent Choice Expert Rating.

Serrels said, "They scored well for their delicious smell and they had a good balance of crispness and fluffiness."

Overall thoughts

"Our results show that just because one product performs well, others from the same brand might not necessarily have the same results," explained Serrels.

The prices are based off of chips purchased in Sydney stores in February, 2024.

The chip experts behind the judging panel included Amanda Walker, Co-Founder and Owner of Lord of the Fries; Fiona Mair, seasoned home economist and test coordinator at Choice; Adrian Lini, test officer at Choice with a background in agricultural science; and Conrad Lucas-Holland, Systems Administrator in Choice's IT department chosen to represent the everyday consumer.
