A toastie is a sacred creation, taking one the world's favourite culinary delights – a sandwich – and making it even better by warming it up, making it nice and crispy, and adding a bit of gooey melted cheese.

And while there's often debate about what makes a toastie great or where to get the best toastie, we can finally put those arguments to rest.

The best toastie in Australia has been crowned.

Now, if you're imaging a traditional toastie – we're talking cheese, tomato, maybe a bit of ham – stop that right now.

Tradition went out the window when it came to creating this masterpiece, and it seems to have paid off

The Chapel Champion Awards saw Melbourne's top cafes go head to head to create a toastie with enough x-factor to be crowned the best in Australia.

The café that came out on top was Kaneffi, with a creation that has been described as somewhat controversial.

And while most think of something savoury when imagining a toastie, this sweet Lebanese toasted croissant creation is far from that.

The award-winning recipe takes a warm, buttery croissant, stuffs it with gooey cheese kaneffi, toasts it so it's nice and crispy, then tops it with a drizzle of pistachio sauce, melted milk Belgian chocolate, crushed pistachios, toasted kataifi, and a sprinkle of gold flakes.

Kaneffi's co-owner Dianne Dagher said she and her partner couldn't be more excited about the huge win.

"All the Chapel Street traders were tasked with creating a toastie that could be crowned Australia's best, and this is what we came up with," she shared.

"The Dubai Kaneffi Toasted Croissant combines sweet and savoury elements in a way that truly showcases our creativity and commitment to delighting our customers.

"Winning amidst such fierce competition, with over 15,000 votes cast, has left us gobsmacked!"
