Aldi trialling major refrigerator change across Australian supermarkets

If you've set foot in in an Aldi you'd know that it's wise to be wearing some extra layers, with the store infamous for it's unique cool climate.

Now the German supermarket giant is in the process of implementing a major change in coming months that will combat the chill.

Speaking to 9Honey, a spokesperson confirmed that Aldi will be expanding its trial of chiller doors in their refrigerated sections.

"The change will be implemented across an additional range of selected stores from late September following the success of its initial trial in five NSW stores," the supermarket confirmed.

Refrigeration accounts for 20 per cent of Aldi supermarkets' total electricity usage.

"By placing glass doors on chilled ranges, shoppers can easily scan for what they need through the glass without feeling the chill," a spokesperson said.

The announcement comes after the verification of Aldi Australia's 100 per cent renewable electricity commitment in the federal government's 2023 Corporate Emissions Reduction Transparency (CERT) Report.

The change is also an attempt to become more sustainable and energy efficient.

"Each trial store so far has recorded an energy saving in refrigeration usage of approximately 30 per cent," the spokesperson noted. "That's good different."

The trials have been received well thus far, with many Aldi fans impressed by the store's dedication to the environment.

"Great! So glad to see stores putting doors back on fridges, so much energy is wasted without doors," one wrote.

"Much more energy efficient by putting doors on their fridges," another seconded.

Others were more excited about the potential possibility of escaping the chill while shopping.

"Hopefully this will make their stores less freezing," one wrote.

"I always get this anxiety whenever I plan to go to Aldi if I wore enough layers even in summer!" another added, referring to a concern shared amongst many women shoppers.
