Aldi launches family dinner kits for under $4 a serve

Jane de Graaff

If you've ever been interested in trying a meal kit at home – where all the thinking is done for you, and almost everything is included in the box but you still get to do the fun part (the cooking) — then this is the perfect news for you.

Aldi has joined the meal kit set. That's right, the bargain supermarket, known for having legions of loyal fans flock to its exclusive and own-brand food products, has launched its first serves of DIY cooking kits in stores.

We can just about hear the stampede to the store now.

There are a couple of key points that set these new cooking kits apart. First, you can pick them up during your usual shop, because unlike the online ordering and subscriptions ones, you can just grab what extra bits you need as you shop. The second point of difference is the low price, at just $3.99 a kit.

What you need to know is this: the kits aren't just the usual sauce plus noodles or rice deal. What they include is all the veggies you need, diced and ready to go, but they don't include the proteins or carbohydrates.

The kits will feed a family of four for around $14, roughly $3.50 per person. Aldi/Supplied

This means these kits sit somewhere between the ones that include spices, sauces and instructions (like other supermarket kits) and the ones that include everything from start to finish (like a Hello Fresh).

These new kits from Aldi will require you to buy your noodles and chicken as additional, but even with everything factored in, they still feed a family of four for around $14 (about $3.50 per person) – and you can easily sub in and out items that you prefer.

If you're not into beef mince for the chilli con carne, that's fine, just grab some pork or chicken mince instead. Even better, grab what's on special to drop the price even further.

Each kit comes complete with a QR code that'll take you straight to demonstrations walking you through each recipe, which really does take any of the planning and worry out of making dinner when you've got that old cooking fatigue.

The range includes pad Thai, chilli con carne, butter chicken, green curry and pho soup, and they look pretty good to us. That's just one more way to take the stress out of making dinner.

And given the way Aldi attracts staunch fans to its products, we can't wait to hear how this one is received.
