Because while science says bananas — with their shot of potassium — work well, or fresh fruit like watermelon helps to rehydrate, the honest-to-goodness truth is that most of us feel like something to settle our stomachs and swear by the age-old idea of soaking up any alcohol left in our system with carbs. Lots of carbs.

And here it is, the raging debate around what the perfect food to cure a hangover is. Brace yourselves.

GOLD STANDARD

King of the felling-rough heap is the classic bacon and egg roll, along with a good dose of McDonald's. Sure it could be chips, or a bunch of hash browns stuffed into a cheeseburger, but one thing is certain, we love our carbs after a big night. It's salty, it's comforting, it's familiar, and we feel like it's soaking up the booze and settling our stomachs... even if that's a placebo effect.

There simply was no challenge here and people even noted that they felt the two were almost interchangable.

FIGHTING CHANCE

Coming in at the second tier was a full fry-up. As long as it had eggs and bacon, we're happy, and then any number of other things from beans to sausage can join it. Hopefully someone else will have cooked it for you and you can lie there feeling like death until the fry-up comes to comfort you.

Bacon is definitely a must in a fry-up.

TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT

This is where things got a little more varied. Some people swear by Vegemite toast to pick them up after a hard night, or failing that, just plain toast. But some magical unicorns amongst us like to go for the smashed avo toast with all the trimmings. Kind of like they're pretending that they feel fine — even if they clearly don't. It's that fake it 'til you make it mentality.

But then there's the people that rather than living in denial, opt to roll with it and just order another drink, usually the same one they had last night. The thinking is, "Why feel the pain now, when you can delay it a little longer?"

YEAH, NAH

We tried here, by including porridge on the list for when you just want something simple and filling to steady you, or something light and fresh to pick you up and replace lost fluids, but porridge and fruit did not get a look in. We'd rather not eat at all when we feel rough, than go for these guys.

Good luck with the season of celebration, folks. Stay safe, drink responsibly.
