Fitness blogger praised for sharing 'butt dimples' on Instagram

Scrolling through Instagram, you’d be forgiven for thinking ‘healthy’ people can only look a certain way: lithe, smooth, toned, flawless.

So when a popular fitness blogger shared a photo revealing her “butt dimples” this week, it was a refreshing counterpoint to the images we’ve become accustomed to seeing.

The photo depicts Madalin Giorgetta sitting by a pool in her swimsuit, a fresh coconut in her hand and a small amount of cellulite visible on her backside.

While it’s estimated upwards of 90 per cent of women have cellulite - which appears as dimpling of the skin - we very rarely see it on social media. If ever.

Giorgetta looks radiant in the portrait, but admitted on Instagram that she initially thought it was “gross” and planned to delete it.

“I shared another similar more flattering picture on my Instagram (sans butt dimples) and never thought I would ever share the original photo,” she told her almost 400,000 followers.

Yet Giorgetta’s attitude to the photo, taken by her sister, changed when Women’s Health and Fitness approached her to feature in a ‘body image’ issue. 

The magazine also asked her to submit a selection of photos, one of which would be chosen to appear alongside the interview.

“I hesitated to send this picture as I didn't know how I'd feel about this being on every newsstand in Australia,” the personal trainer said. 

“In a ‘what the hell’ moment I emailed it through.”

This week, the magazine featuring Giorgetta’s interview has been released - complete with the photo she once hated. But this time, seeing it has made her proud.

“I'm extremely proud and so happy I made the decision to publish a photo of myself that shows me for me,” she wrote.
