Suiting lessons from the ARIA Awards red carpet

The ARIA Awards red carpet isn't always an appropriate source of style inspo for the majority who don't find themselves on the guest list for events like this. Unlike the Australian music industry's finest it's harder to get away with wearing a sequin suit jacket or a sheer billowy pirate shirt to the office, or after work drinks for that matter.

While the 2018 ARIA Awards red carpet delivered plenty of wild looks it also served up some unexpected suiting tips. We couldn't help but take style notes so that the next time you suit up you do it right.

It's all about the details

Conrad Sewell walked the red carpet in a Saint Laurent virgin wool tuxedo on Wednesday night, but it was the suit's satin trims that left us taking a closer look. It's nothing new to suiting, satin trims on lapels and down side seams on pants have been options for seasons but subtle detailing, as seen on this Saint Laurent favourite, is what you need for any black-tie event.

Naturally, Vance Joy (and his curls!) amazed on the red carpet. Wearing a custom Remy suit, this isn't the first time the ARIA Award winner, for Adult Contemporary Album, opted for a made-to-measure suit. For anyone who suits up on the regular, choosing a custom-made suit is smart. It's fitted to your exact size, shape and colour choice, which can be hard to find when buying off the rack. While the initial outlay might seem like a lot, it's a style win in the long run. There's no easier way to make a suit look luxe.

Don't be afraid of colour

Singer and TODAY Extra host David Campbell stepped out in a dusty pink Ted Baker suit, it was a welcome shade to spot in amongst the crowd. While Campbell pulled this colour off on the red carpet it's a shade that can also be worn casually (think: with light linen shirting). If you need something more playful on rotation in your suit wardrobe a muted shade like this Ted Baker dusty pink is the perfect versatile option.

Black and white (is always alright!)

There's nothing sleeker than a fitted black suit and crisp white shirt. It's the style combo that will forever stand the test of time and as a result should be added to every man's wardrobe. Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes, TODAY show host Richard Wilkins and superstar Troye Sivan (even Courtney Barnett!) proved that you can't go wrong with the monochrome choice.
