Goodbye, Barbie: Margot Robbie oozes gothic glamour on the Wuthering Heights press tour

The Wuthering Heights press tour has delivered us a smouldering parade of gothic-inspired ensembles from Margot Robbie

The 35-year-old is the leading lady of Emerald Fennell's film adaptation of Emily Bronte's Gothic fiction classic of the same name, starring opposite fellow Aussie Jacob Elordi.

Her fashion choices throughout the movie's promotional tour have been a far cry from the pink, almost cartoonish looks she wore when Barbie came out in 2023.

From corsetry and lace to jaw-dropping jewellery and intricate hairstyles, the Aussie icon has pushed the boundaries of Victorian-era romantic style.

Let's take a look at all the outfits we've seen during the various stops on her Wuthering Heights era.

Sydney

Robbie was back on home soil as she led arrivals at the Wuthering Heights opening night celebration in Sydney on Thursday, February 12.

And for the special occasion, as she joined her Aussie co-star Jacob Elordi at the Australian premiere at the State Theatre, Robbie stunned in another gorgeous Victorian era-inspired gown.

The actress looked stylish and chic in an ivory couture dress by Ashi Studio, which was custom-made by the designer.

Her frock featured a bodice with a lace-up back and sheer, long sleeves and a flowing sheer skirt.

In a unique and special twist, Ashi Studio revealed the bodice was hand-painted.

"The dress in rusted écru evokes 18th-century corsetry, the bodice is hand-painted to appear centuries old," Ashi Studio wrote in an Instagram post about the stunning look.

The actress completed her look with a choker, wore her long dark blonde locks out and over her shoulders in curls and natural-looking makeup with pops of blush and a nude lip.

Shortly after the event, the duo rocked up for a surprise appearance at the iconic Westpac OpenAir Cinema.

Margot dazzled in a gold mini dress for the occasion, as 1,700 shocked visitors cheered and screamed at the duo's shock arrival.

London

Robbie wore one of her most stunning looks at the UK premiere in London, including a one-of-a-kind piece believed to be from Charlotte Brontë's personal collection.

The Aussie actress and former Neighbours star turned heads in a beige semi-sheer dress, which featured a long lace train and green embroidery and feathers.

The gown featured a lace-up back, while an olive green embroided choker snaked around her neck and she accessorised with small, chandelier earrings.

Robbie also wore a piece of Victorian mourning jewellery owned by the one-and-only Charlotte Brontë herself – though whether it's real or a replica is unknown.

The author had set a sparkling amethyst stone in a strap made from the hair of her dead sisters, Emily and Anne Brontë, as was custom in the 18th century.

Bronte is believed to have worn the bracelet daily and it now lives at the Brontë Parsonage Museum.

Robbie posed at the event with her Aussie co-star Elordi, who looked smart in a matching suit.

The star into the archives for a photocall at Spencer House in London.

She wore an outfit pulled straight from John Galliano's Spring/Summer 1992 runway, continuing her run of Victorian-inspired looks.

She wore a silk brocade duster coat, held together by four hook-and-eye closures at her sternum, flashing her bare stomach.

Just like it was first seen on the runway 34 years ago, Robbie paired the jacket with a black micro-mini skirt and red thigh high stockings.

Each stocking had a pink silk ribbon at the top of each thigh, matching the pink detailing on the sleeves of the coat.

She finished the look off with pale blue-gray satin d'Orsay heels and pearl drop earrings.

For the photocall at Spencer House in London ahead of the premiere of the movie, she was joined by her co-star, Elordi.

He opted for a bold red jacket, paired with a black shirt and black jeans as they posed for the cameras. The duo first posed side-by-side, still wearing their sunglasses.

The touch of red in both looks gave an element of co-ordination we've seen in some of their tour outfits so far.

In another London appearance, a global content creator Q&Aat Claridge's, Robbie rocked a leather minidress with a corset-style bodice and a tiered skirt.

The same day, she was photographed at the BBC Radio Studios for interviews, wearing a corset top and a pair of very, very low trousers.

The low-slung waistband sparked a bit of panic online from those who lived through the early 2000s and are nervous to see the era-defining trend return.

Paris

Robbie delivered plenty of jaw-dropping looks in Paris.

For a photocall outside the iconic Sacre-Couer, she wore a black gown that featured a corset detail through the bodice and skirt.

An almost garter-like element held the rest of the gown together, creating a delicate cut-out in the floor-length frock.

She wore her hair up, with loose curls framing her face and the off the shoulder design made the choker necklace the standout feature of the look.

But it was the rain soaked background of the iconic Sacré-Coeur that made the look feel so much more dramatic.

Meanwhile, Elordi wore a crisp white trench coat, layered over a white shirt and black tie. He finished the look with black trousers and shiny loafers, giving the pair a monochromatic look.

The Paris premiere of Wuthering Heights delivered an even more breathtaking look – a Chanel ballgown that looked like it was straight off the set of the movie.

Robbie's dress was a velvet, wine ensemble with a sweeping bodice on the front, a billowing train on the back and a cream satin underskirt to boot.

The dress was custom Chanel from the mind of Matthieu Blazy.

At the back, you would be forgiven for missing the abundance of feathers sweeping behind – a nice touch which doesn't take away from the drama of the train.

Unlike the rest of the tour, Robbie decided to wear her hair in a sleek down style for the occasion.

She completed the look with a bold choker necklace.

Los Angeles

The Oscar nominee stepped out in an incredible ballgown at the world premiere of the film in Los Angeles.

Her gown featured a lace bodice with a sweetheart neckline, which eventually melts into black halfway down her body.

The fit-and-flare dress extended into a black petal-like structure, before blooming into an upside-down flower with crimson at the hem.

Around her neck was a piece of movie history – the Taj Mahal Diamond necklace on a ruby Cartier necklace, once owned by Elizabeth Taylor.

The necklace was a gift to Taylor from her twice-wedded husband Richard Burton for her 40th birthday.

It was last sold to a mystery buyer by Christie's Auction House in 2011 for a whopping $US8.8 million (approx. $12.4 million).

Her co-star Elordi, 28, accompanied her in a fully black suit, looking dapper.

Earlier in the day, Robbie showed off a more risqué look.

The Neighbours star stepped out at the photocall event in LA in a red corset-inspired outfit with many different components.

The full-sleeve snake-skin corset wrapped around her chest, leaving room for a structural pointy bra made up of shells to peek through.

She paired it with a matching miniskirt that rose up at the front, and heels in a matching pattern.

Robbie wore another choker, featuring a locket hanging off a red thread.

On her wedding ring finger she wore a ruby gemstone ring, and on the pinky of her other hand she wore a matching signet ring she got with her co-star Elordi.

According to Cece Jewellery, the jeweller who made the rings, the gold rings feature an image of two entwined skeletons in the same pose Robbie and Elordi take on the poster, which she says "is a quiet reminder that love never truly dies. As time passes and everything else withers away, what remains is the enduring bond between two souls."

Circling the skeletons is a quote from author Emily Brontë: "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same."

The words are framed by roses and thorns, and the ring is engraved on one side with the date of the book & movie, while the other has C & H engraved, for Catherine and Heathcliff.

New York

Robbie started the press tour with a bang on January 26, wearing a sheer black lace dress by Alexander McQueen on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The look was complete with black heels, while the actress' blonde hair was styled in a half-up, half-down look with waves.

The halter neckline of the see-through gown added to the Victorian vibe of the dress.

Robbie was also spotted in a gorgeous black mini dress by Roberto Cavalli.

The mini, revealed on Instagram by her stylist Andrew Mukamal, featured a square neckline with a velvet hem and a classic bell sleeve.

If that wasn't gothic enough, the look was matched with a gorgeous red and gold pendant, attached to a thick black choker.

Robbie's hair was pinned back in a similar half-up, half-down style.

A new chapter of method dressing

Dressing to match the theme of a film is not a new concept, with dozens of stars participating in the act, called "method dressing," when promoting new projects.

Robbie is notoriously good at it, making headlines for almost every outfit she wore during the Barbie press tour in 2023.

Many were recreations of iconic outfits worn by the doll over the years.

Wuthering Heights follows the intense, tragic love story between a dark and complex orphan named Heathcliff and the high-society Catherine Earnshaw.
