'A really challenging item': Expert tips to embrace 'divisive' style trend

Gabrielle Oehlmann

Style trends come and go like a never-ending fashion yo-yo and while some old trends can quietly find their way back into our wardrobes without too much of a splash, others bring with them an outpouring of outrage (I'm looking at you jelly shoes).

One of the latest to cause an uproar is the classic capri pant, which screams '90s and noughties nostalgia.

Some, like Sabrina Carpenter and Bella Hadid, have embraced the returning trend, rocking the slim-fit, cropped trousers with pride but others aren't so keen.

Whether you love them or hate them, the "divisive" pants are well and truly back and Sydney Morning Herald fashion editor Damien Woolnough has some tips on how to embrace them.

Speaking with Today Extra, Woolnough empathised that, given their awkward cut, the pants can be difficult to style.

"The pants themselves are divisive," he said.

"They hit mid-calf so they can cut you off in a very awkward place.

"Unless you're a supermodel like Bella Hadid who wears them incredibly well or Sabrina Carpenter who has that great retro vibe about her then it can be a really challenging item."

If you are hoping to jump on the trend, Woolnough suggests opting for simple and tailored and says sticking with one main colour is your best bet when styling the unique cut.

"If you are going to embrace the capri pant, I think go monochrome. [Like] black and black," he says.

As for what to pair the pants with, Woolnough recommends pairing the pants with a "structured, tailored look on top like a black blazer or eve a tailored shirt.

He says this "contrasts with the simplicity of the silhouette".

As the weather gets warmer too (hello spring), Woolnough also recommends pairing capris with a tank top which can make for a simple yet "perfect" look.

Meanwhile, for those who are eager to jump onto the trend but feel that capri pants simply don't suit them, Woolnough says all hope is not lost.

Instead, a cropped trouser may be an ideal alternative.

Very similar to the capri pant, cropped trousers are a little longer and stop just above the ankle – a look that can be a lot easier for people to style.
