'One trend I'll be skipping': Love them or hate them, capri pants are back

Love them or hate them, capri pants are well and truly back.

Selena Gomez was pictured in Los Angeles wearing the controversial cropped, slimline pants – the latest clothing item to be revived from the 2000s graveyard – just yesterday.

Capris are one of those styles you either love or hate, and as a Gen Z who grew up wearing them, I hate them.

Their resurgence has sent a shiver down my spine – nevertheless, they are coming back in full swing, and there's nothing we can do to stop it.

The resurgence of the style has gotten mixed reviews from Gen Z and Millennials, who were the target market for the pants' initial 2000s resurgence.

"They didn't work on me the first time, and I am not going to try again," one Reddit user commented on a post about the pants coming back.

"I'm excited! A slim capri is way better for me than the current wide pants," another said.

"I'm thrilled they're back, but mostly because I'm under 5 feet tall so Capris are my go-to normal length pants I don't have to take home and hem," another person said.

"My legs look better when not chopped off mid-calf. Full length, ankle cut or shorts all work so no old lady Capris for this old lady," another said.

"This is one trend I'll be skipping. Doesn't look good on me," a user commented.

The style first became popular in the 1950s-'60s with icons like Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe known to wear the cropped pants.

They then fell out of popularity from the 1970s to the 1990s, before making a major comeback in 1999, into the 2000s.

Capri pants exploded in popularity; they were mainstream and EVERYWHERE.

The trend was pushed along by celebrities including Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez between 2000 and 2009.

Capri pants also went through a renovation in the 2000s, with different types emerging, including cargo and denim Capris.

They fell out of the mainstream again in the 2010s, as fashion moved towards a different era of style.

Their 2020s resurgence is (sadly) not a surprise, as the fashion cycle moves back towards 2000s-inspired clothes.

Dozens of celebrities have hopped onto the trend, from singer Selena Gomez to supermodels Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Gigi and Bella Hadid.

The Hadid sisters were two of the first to bring back the pant, with images of them both wearing the cropped pant from 2023.

Meanwhile, Bella Hadid has been spotted in capris dozens of times, and even though I despise them, she absolutely pulls them off.

Capris aren't just back in the sleek and elegant way the Hadids wear them. There are cargo capris, patterned capris, baggy and tight-fitting capris.

There are even bodysuits that cut off right under the knee, as seen on Nicole Scherzinger, who wore the cropped pantsuit at New York Fashion Week in February.

I will confess I do understand why they are popular – because they are incredibly versatile.

You can dress them up or down, and they can be worn in a range of ways and can be altered to fit any style.

Almost every major brand now sells some style of capri pants, for every age in every fabric you can think of.

While I won't be hopping onto the trend anytime soon, the option is there for anyone who's excited by their resurgence.
