Police intervene after dog gets head trapped in treat jar

One pooch has had to be rescued by police after taking his love for food to extreme levels by getting his head stuck in a treat jar.

Instead of waiting for his owners to hand out his treats, Murphy went mouth-first into a container of Milk-Bone in an attempt to reach the last one.

The incident proved to be a frustrating one for his owners, whose first two attempts to free their pooch failed.

Murphy's awkward situation was revealed in a Facebook post from the Whitefish Bay Police Department in the US.

The police explained why Murphy ended up being rescued by them instead of a vet.

"His owners had tried getting the container off his head for over an hour before they tried taking him to the vet, which was closed, so they stopped in the police station for some assistance," the police said.

Thankfully the treat jar appears to have been made from plastic allowing the police to gently cut the container off Murphy's head.

They went piece by piece removing the bottom of the jar before cutting off the sides and then finally the rim of the jar.

"Officers Potthast and Streeter did a paw-esome job of cutting him loose to freedom," the Facebook caption said.

When the final cut was made you can see the relief on poor tired Murphy's face.

The rescue effort impressed many who are hoping Murphy got plenty of treats after his ordeal.

"Wow, that's great! I don't think I would have ever thought of bringing a pet to the police department for something like this," a man said.

"Animals are like children, they want something bad enough they are persistent and get themselves into trouble getting what they want," one said.

"You guys better have him all the treats he needs wanted!! Poor baby," another said.

Murphy is one of many dogs to get stuck in an object and need rescuing.

One man had to cut through a wheel when his boxer dove through the centre while chasing a chipmunk.

The dog's head was stuck but apart from some scratches and 'bruises to her ego' she was fine after her rescue.

Meanwhile a dog in the US had an entire community rallying behind it when it was spotted roaming around with a bowl stuck on its head.

Police and locals tried searching for the pooch who darted off several times but eventually she was found and taken to a vet for treatment.
