Woman spends $35,000 cloning dead cat: 'Just when you think you've seen it all'

We all love our pets but one woman has taken her love for her deceased cat to a new level, spending AUD $35,000 to clone it.

The woman's name is Kelly, and she told Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary on ITV's This Morning she decided to clone her cat Chai who died, calling the clone Belle.

"Chai was so young. I just felt like I didn't have that time with her but I wanted to have a part of her," she said.

Kelly, who lives in Texas in the US, has also shared her cloning journey on her TikTok account @clonekitty.

"They take your cat's DNA and put it into an empty egg that is then placed inside of a surrogate cat," she said in a video.

Kelly told her TikTok followers her cat Chai was "my entire world and soul mate and died at 5YO".

However her clone, Belle, is a little different to the original in many ways.

"They share some core personality traits but mostly are very different," Kelly explains.

She even says she plans to clone the original cat again to create more kittens.

Many ITV viewers have taken to Twitter to share their feelings about Kelly's story.

"Just when you think you've seen it all, a woman has paid $25,000 to clone a cat!" one said.

"When I get a new pet I get one that doesn't look in any way similar to one I've had before," another tweeted. I couldn't get one that looks exactly the same as one I've had before. #ThisMorning."

"$25,000 and the company just popped down the pet shop and got a new white kitten! #ThisMorning," said one viewer.

Kelly says she has received negative feedback via her TikTok channel as well, but as one person said, "It's her money she can do what she wants."
