A sneak peek at the most popular pet names for 2025 has revealed the top name from years past could be bumped from first place.

Lort Smith Animal Hospital has shared a look at the results so far with six months left to go in the race.

The names collected come from hospital records at the hospital's North Melbourne and Campbellfield sites and cover cats, dogs and pocket pets like rabbits.

While Luna has been the most popular name for both cats and dogs in previous years, according to multiple pet name lists, it has slipped in the rankings for dogs.

Bella has overtaken Luna as the most popular female dog names with Luna now in second place.

The number one male dog name so far this year is Charlie, followed by Max.

While Luna seems to be slipping in popularity as a dog's name it so far remains the number one name for female cats.

Interestingly, Bella is the second most popular cat's name showing that Bella and Luna are common with both cat and dog owners.

''For cats, names indicating royalty and riches are also proving to be popular. It will certainly be interesting to see the final list in December and get a taste for what is influencing our choice of pet names at the final count," Suzana Talevski, Lort Smith Animal Hospital spokesperson, said.
