The numbers have been crunched: These are the top 10 most popular dog breeds in Australia in 2025
You're not imagining it – when they say every man and their dog goes to the dog park together on a Saturday morning, they actually do mean every Australian and their household pet that's overwhelmingly one specific dog breed.
That's according to Pet Insurance Australia, who have parsed through their customer data for pets born in 2024-2025 and, after crunching the numbers, have come to the conclusion there truly is one dog breed Australians prefer above them all – but numbers two to 10 may surprise you.
"Australia is a nation of dog lovers, and every year, the list of most popular breeds shifts to reflect trends in pet ownership," Pet Insurance Australia's Nadia Crighton says.
Read on to see the top 10 most popular dog breeds in Australia in 2025.

9. Maltese
The ultimate 'crusty white dog'!
Likely called Molly or Coco, it's not unusual to see a slew of Maltese dogs out and about on your street.
8. Labrador
One of the more sociable and outgoing breeds, Labradors usually get along with children and other pets.
7. German Shepherd
Beautiful and big, German Shepherds are also quite a controversial breed of dog to own, according to some veterinarians.
6. Miniature Dachshund
A constant feature on these lists, though the Miniature Dachshund is popular, they are also known for having health problems.
4. Border Collie
It's fitting the Border Collie is so high up on the list, considering Ellie, the deaf Border Collie, was this week crowned the 2025 Australian Dog of the Year for her incredible work as a therapy dog.
3. Golden Retriever
One of the most popular family dogs in the world, Golden Retrievers known for their sweet, friendly nature. They are eager to please.
Here's what to know about them before you get one for your own family.
2. French Bulldog
There have been calls from animal welfare groups to partially ban French Bulldogs in Australia over the years, but the 'baby-faced' dog breed is still among the most popular to own in the country.
1. Cavoodle
In a move that's absolutely unsurprising, the Cavoodle has once again topped the most popular dog breeds in Australia list.
"The Cavoodle remains Australia's favourite dog, combining the best of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle," Pet Insurance Australia's Nadia Crighton says.
While the Cavoodle is overall the country's favourite breed, when we go state by state, it doesn't always come out on top...
Queensland
Queenslanders have slightly different preferences to their neighbours down south, but not when it comes to their top three preferred dog breeds.
"Queensland's list closely mirrors the national ranking, with an added emphasis on breeds that thrive in warm weather," Crighton says.
"The Labrador and Maltese remain popular due to their suitability for the state's beach-friendly lifestyle, while doodle breeds continue to rise due to their low-shedding coats."
