Before we get stuck into specific breeds we thought it best to give an honourable mention to Cadabomb Okami.
This pup is the first of it's kind, being a cross between a Caucasian shepherd and a wolf.
He was sold to a dog enthusiast in India and as of February 2025, is the most expensive dog in the world.
Cadabomb Okami sold for a whopping $9 million!
Now, onto some more realistic breeds.
Afghan hound
First on our list of breeds is the Afghan hound.
These pups are highly independent and confident and can be quite antisocial with strangers.
However they are fiercely protective and loyal to their family.
Afghan hounds can be quite hard to come across in Australia, but tend to sell for $5000 to $6000.
Dogo Argentino
If you live in Australia and have already fallen in love with this pup, we hate to break it to you but unfortunately us Aussies will never know the love of a Dogo Argentino.
These pups are considered a restricted breed and are banned in Australia, but if you were to go overseas you'd be looking at paying around $6000 for one.
French bulldog
Yes these pups are super common, but they can come at a hefty cost.
While some breeders will sell a French bulldog for around $5000, if you're looking for a pedigree it can cost upwards of $7000.
And if you're searching for a French Bulldog with a rare coat or colour pattern, be prepared for a price tag around the $12,000 mark.
Pharaoh hound
The Pharaoh hound, despite it's intimidating appearance, is a sweet, gentle, sociable breed.
They tend to sell for around $8000.
Saluki
The average cost of a purebred Saluki ranges from about $6000 to $7000, with some selling for as high as $10,000.
The breed is considered to be quite rare and has a similar temperament to the Afghan hound being devoted to their family but quite aloof with strangers.
Chow Chow
You can't help but want to give this big ball of fluff a cuddle.
Chow Chow's can be incredibly stubborn and independent though, so they're not the best breed for those looking for a close companion.
They're also not the best breed for those on a budget, often costing upward of $8000.
Azawakh
Highly intelligent but fiercely independent, the Azawakh is another rare dog breed with a hefty price tag.
Typically, these pups will sell for around $9000.
Tibetan mastiff
The Tibetan mastiff is like a giant teddy bear.
A very expensive giant teddy bear.
Tibetan Mastiffs can come as low as $6000 but if you're looking for one with a champion bloodline it's going to be easily upward of $12,000.
In 2014, one even sold in China for around $3 million!
