'I shared a chicken parmi with my pooch in Australia's first Dine With Your Dog experience'

I'm obsessed with my dog, but I think she's only mildly obsessed with me. While I like to throw all my love at her, she prefers a treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen approach.

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but it keeps us on our toes.

So when an opportunity came up to try Australia's first meal kit for dog owners and their pooches, I knew a shared three-course meal was the bonding experience we needed.

To celebrate International Dog Day on August 26, the Aussie meal kit start-up Atlas Weekly has teamed up with the fresh dog food delivery service ilume to create the Dine with your Dog hybrid meal kit. Dine with your Dog hybrid meal kit, so you need to be quick if you want to try it.

So what is it?

The limited edition meal kit offers a three-course human degustation paired with a matching dog-friendly entrée, main and dessert. The kit costs $50, and $10 from each kit is donated to The Lost Dogs' Home. Wholesome!

Human entree: Seared wagyu beef salad with Asian inspired slaw, crispy peanuts & shallots

Human main: Aussie chicken parmi with oven-baked chips & green salad

Human dessert: Chocolate, peanut & banana layer cake with Chantilly cream

Dog entree: Beef jerky salad with dehydrated vegetables and cucumber

Dog main: Aussie chicken parmi with poached potato & carrot in broth

Dog dessert: Peanut, banana & carob cake with yoghurt

The prep

My partner Andrew played chef and waiter while Fiadh and I made small talk at the dinner table.

I asked him for his thoughts after he prepared our meal.

"The instructions were clear and easy to follow," he said. "The only thing that I wish I'd known in advance was to have way more olive oil than I did. The ingredients provided were all fresh and high quality."

With a $50 price tag, Andrew thought the kit was pretty affordable.

"It was quite good value given you could easily have made food for three with all the produce that was included," he said. "We have plenty left over from the original meal- whole cooking process probably took around 45 minutes (not including setting up and cleaning up)."

For the record, I asked Fiadh to clean up and she refused.

The verdict

The food was tasty and Fiadh agreed. She was sceptical at first, especially given she's usually discouraged from sitting at the dining table and eating food off human plates. (I will pay for that later.)

She enjoyed the dog parmi the most, and was intrigued by the dessert yoghurt.

The experience was cute to watch. Is it something you'd do frequently, if given the chance? Probably not. Should you spoil your pup with a tasty date night on International Dog Day? Yes.
