Guide Dogs Australia announces arrival of first puppy litter for 2022

Guide Dogs Australia has announced the safe arrival of its first puppy litter for the new year.

A healthy litter of seven adorable Labradors were born on January 11 to mother Jinx, with four male and three female pups.

The puppies were born from the 'Z' litter, meaning all the guide dogs-in-training will be christened with names beginning with the letter Z.

Guide Dogs Nursery Coordinator Fiona Kachel was with Jinx when she gave birth and has seen first-hand the bond develop between the new mum and her pups.

"Jinx is a really great mum. She really loves her pups and is taking great care of them," Kachel explained.

"There are five black pups and two yellow. They have just started opening their eyes in the past few days, and I can already tell these puppies are going to be very active as they get older."

"Each of these pups needs a loving and responsible home to help care for them over the next 12 months," Guide Dogs Australia said in a press release.

"Puppy Raisers play a critical role in transforming these young pups into reliable Guide Dogs that will one day provide essential independence and freedom to someone who is blind or has low vision."

The charity said even more puppies are due to be born in the coming days and are seeking big-hearted volunteers to help raise them.

It costs $50,000 to breed, raise and train a Guide Dog, so it is crucial that the pups are trained properly and have the best opportunity to graduate from the program.
