'Terrible choice': Dog trainer reveals the dog breed not to get if you want a couch snuggle buddy

Gabrielle Oehlmann

Many dog owners want to be able to snuggle up with their dog on the couch after a long day at work.

While there are plenty of breeds that make for great lap dogs, one pet expert has warned against the one breed you definitely should not get if a snuggly pet is what you're after.

In a TikTok video, Will Atherton, who is a Clinical Canine Behaviourist and is known as @iamwillatherton, warned against the popular dog breed that he says can be a "terrible choice" for most owners.

Atherton explains that while they are beautiful dogs, springer spaniels have high energy levels and specific needs which many pet owner's cannot accomodate.

"This is why I hate the springer spaniel," Atherton explained in a video, saying this as he patted a springer spaniel sitting in front of him.

"Now I'll let you in on a little secret. There aren't actually any breeds that I hate but I just strongly believe that breeds have a purpose.

"And for some people, a springer spaniel might be a great choice and for some people they might be a terrible choice.

"I think the reality is that for most people the springer spaniel is a terrible choice."

Atherton continued to explain that he understands many people get the popular breed because "they look awesome", they have "adorable" ears and "they match a barbour jacket which makes it cool for Instagram pictures.

But this breed wasn't made for nice photos or to snuggle up on the coach, Atherton explains.

"What they were actually bred for, which is to work non-stop like frenzied lunatics through barbed wire, thistles, thorns and all sorts using their nose to non-stop be working, means that they don't have a very good off-switch," he said.

"Bringing a dog like that to try and chill on the sofa with you is very hard to do and is rarely achievable, which is why I see so many here with problem behaviours at my canine behaviour centre."
