TikTok video reveals why you should never use your fingers to save a choking baby

As many parents may know, babies are inquisitive and are prone to putting things in their mouths.

What many parents may not know is just how tiny their airways really are and what to do in the event their baby is choking

In this situation, your natural instinct may be to reach into their throat with your fingers and try to pull out whatever it is that is obstructing the bub's airway.

However, Tiny Hearts Education has come out to advise against using your fingers when a baby is choking.

In the TikTok video, the children's safety program gave a visual demonstration on the wrong and right way to react to a choking baby.

Tiny Hearts used a plastic tube that was no wider than a 20c piece, which is about the size of a baby's airway and a cherry tomato.

The demonstration shows that putting your fingers in your baby's throat to clear the obstruction will actually result in you pushing it further down their airway.

"If your little one has a complete obstruction, no air can get in or out," the video says.

"Getting it out with your fingers could push it down further."

The demonstrator then uses her hand to whack the tube, similar to the heimlich manoeuvre, which results in the cherry tomato dislodging from the tube and popping out. 

"Back blows and chest thrusts are your only option and are very effective when done correctly," the video caption added.

Parents in the comment section were incredibly grateful to Tiny Hearts not only for the timely reminder but also for the fantastic visual.
