The most important lesson Turia Pitt wants to teach her sons

The author, motivational speaker and athlete is 9Honey's newest columnist and she's ready to talk candidly about parenting.

"Some days it's amazing and other days it's just exhausting and relentless," she admits.

The 34-year-old mum-of-two, who shares her gorgeous sons with partner Michael Hoskin, was trapped in a horror grassfire 10 years ago and sustained full-thickness burns to 64 percent of her body.

"I had to learn how to do everything again - how to stand, how to talk, how to eat", she explains. "I know what it's like to start from scratch."

Turia defied almost every expectation placed upon her.

She not only recovered but went on to compete at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii just five years later.

She also gave birth to two beautiful boys, Hakavai, now aged three, and Rahiti, one, while continuing to heal and have her hands, feet and face reconstructed.

The one lesson Turia really wants to pass on to her kids is resilience.

"Hard times are inevitable, but I hope my kids will have the inner resources to be able to cope with that," she says.

Turia also admits that Hakavai is still co-sleeping and it's something that 'perhaps she should have done differently'.

"When Hakavai was a baby he wouldn't sleep unless he was right next to me, and he's still doing it even though he is now four," she reveals.

And she counts her mum as her biggest inspiration when it comes to parenthood.

"My mother is my biggest inspiration," she reveals. "She always puts her kids and her grandkids first. She's so selfless."
