Sharna Burgess ingests her own placenta for post-partum recovery

Sharna Burgess has revealed one post-partum recovery method that she "highly recommends". While answering questions during an Instagram Q&A, the new mum to baby Zane, whom she shares with actor Brian Austin Green, gave her opinion on ingesting placenta.

"I had my placenta picked up by our baby nurse who is also a doula," she wrote in response to another expectant mum, "She processed my placenta … and put it into capsules for me." Burgess says she takes "two a day, like a vitamin."

The Dancing with the Stars judge claims that the practice "is said to help with hormone balancing, milk production, PPD prevention and all around recovery.

"My only testimony I can give is that my recovery has been amazing and my mood and milk the whole time have been positive," she wrote.

Placenta encapsulation has grown in popularity in recent years with many celebrities, along with every day mums, swearing by the positive impact it had on their post-partum recovery.

However the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia urges mothers to take caution when consuming their placenta as "there is currently no evidence to support the claims of health benefits associated with consuming human placenta, and the broader risks are unknown.

"Human placenta is a biological material and is capable of containing and transmitting infectious agents, including bacteria and viruses. In addition, preparation may inadvertently introduce infectious agents. The risk of transmission may be even greater if your placenta is ingested by another person or you ingest another person's placenta," they wrote on their website.
