Outraged parents vent after Mattel-backed official Barbie Dream Fest event turns sour: 'Like Willy Wonka all over again'

Everyone knows parents will do just about anything to make their children's dreams come true, often at considerable expense. Just look at the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show.

And while parents are usually happy to fork out money for childhood experiences, every now and then something goes horribly wrong.

Now, in scenes reminiscent of the disastrous Willy Wonka event in the UK two years ago – as well as other failures including Dashcon and the Fyrefest music festival – parents have taken to social media to express outrage after an event in the US dubbed the 'Barbie Dream Fest' turned sour.

Barbie Dream Fest was a three-day event held in Fort Lauderdale, in the US state of Florida, from March 27-29.

It was an official brand event licenced by Barbie manufacturer Mattel, and run by an external company – the aptly named Mischief Management.

The official website for the event, which is still online, offered ticket options ranging from one-day passes to general passes, as well as a Pink Pass, Dream Pass, Family Pack and even an Icons Pass promising a photo with tennis great Serena Williams.

The tickets did not come cheap, starting from AU$43 for a child and $100 for an adult, while a family pack cost AU$620.

But visitors to the event soon took to social media to vent their frustrations over the underwhelming decorations, including a one-dimensional cardboard cut-out of Barbie's famous Dreamhouse, to bizarre height restrictions on who could ride the supplied pushbikes inside the venue – a local convention centre.

Among them was TikTok user hellhotelshow, who said they paid US$250 (AU$365) to attend the event, which they described as a nightmare.

They shared a video showing them walking into the venue. Across the screen was written, "Entry was promising. It was all downhill from here".

After panning to a sterile and almost empty room, they came to the life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse, which was nothing more than a cardboard cut-out.

They then showed followers around the venue before uploading the video along with the comment, "Is this Fyrefest yet?? Dashson???"

The video has since been viewed 1.9 million times and received more than 4000 comments, with many noticing the similarity to a 2024 Willy Wonka themed event in the Scottish capital of Glasgow that was so bad the police had to be called to deal with angry parents.

"Literally the Willy Wonka event," wrote one, while another said "Every year there must be a Willy Wonka event".

"My daughter's eighth birthday had better theming," wrote another.

Others also took to social media to complain. Among them was Alexandria Dougan, who said they were not even let inside the venue until 45 minutes after the event was due to start because organisers were still setting up.

Once inside, she said the event was very underwhelming, partly because the space was so huge and empty.

Set up inside was a 'tiny' rollerskating ring with no lights.

She said a VW was parked beside the cardboard Dreamhouse, but was locked.

She also called out the fact that many of the vendors inside the venue charged extra – something that wasn't made clear in the advertising material.

Media outlets in the US picked up the story before both Mattel and Mischief Management promised ticket refunds.

In a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Mattel said: "Barbie Dream Fest was created by Mischief Management, which licensed the Barbie brand from Mattel.

"We are working with Mischief Management, who are managing attendee feedback and issuing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets. We want every fan experience to be an excellent one."

In a separate statement, Mischief Management said it was "incredibly grateful" to those who attended the event, which it said was "created as an intimate fan convention designed to foster meaningful connection, inspiration, and closer access to Barbie and her world".

The company also promised to refund all tickets.
