Naming a child is one of life's greatest pressures.

You get one chance to get it right, and if you mess it up, your kid is still stuck with that name for the rest of their lives.

Some people are inspired by family members, others by TV and movies, some are simply inspired by the world around them.

But one mum has taken to Reddit to ask if she made a 'mistake' when seeking the inspiration for her daughter's name.

"I feel like I made bad choices because I just told my daughter (25f) how we came up with her name, and now she hates me," the Reddit user shared.

"When I was 22, her dad and I were laying in bed right after we found out we were having a girl. We were trying to think of names.

"I looked over at a lamp and jokingly said, 'What about shade?', and for some reason, he loved it. It kind of stuck, so I name named her that, except I spelled it 'Shaide'," she continued.

"She now knows the story behind her name, as we never thought to really tell her. Did I make a mistake with this?"

Now, while the name may not seem to bad on its own, the backstory seems to be not only what has upset Shaide herself, but also other Reddit users who have left comments on the thread.

The general consensus seems to be that Shaide's parents did indeed make a mistake in the naming department.

"You should have taken that info to the grave 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣," commented one user.

"My oldest was three when we had her twin sisters. When we asked if there were any names she liked, she insisted that we call one of the babies Cup. We went a different way," said another.

And while most of the comments were unhelpful, simply pointing out the mistake Shaide's mum seems to already know she made, there was one that offered a somewhat helpful solution.

"On a more serious note yes, you messed up," one Reddit user wrote.

"But since you commented that daughter dislikes being called shady and wants to change names, I feel like if you help with the costs/bureaucracy she may forgive you more easily."
