'I've just learned I'm about to be a mum of four boys. Here's how it feels knowing I'll never have a daughter'

A gender reveal when you are pregnant with twins, with two boys already, and knowing you won't be having any more kids seems kind of risky.

But I did it anyway, because despite what people may think, I wasn't overwhelmingly hopeful the inside of that cake was going to be pink.

I've just found out I am about to have twin boys. That's alongside my four- and three-year-old toddlers who are also… boys.

Now, of course, the big question I have been getting is whether I feel disappointed I won't be having a girl.

And the true answer is… 'disappointed' is not the right word.

Ever since starting to have kids, I have never really felt that strongly about having a particular gender.

I always thought it was nice my first two were boys, as they like the same things, have the same type of manners and I feel like I can really approach parenting in a similar way with the both of them. AND hand-me-downs from one boy to another is also such a win!

Though when I was thinking about having another child, I did start to think a little more about the gender this time around.

I had the same hope that if it was a boy, they would all have each other to play with and connect with – though I also thought how nice it would be if it were a girl and they could have a little sister to protect and love.

Though having one girl vs two boys I was also concerned about her feeling alone and perhaps not having that sisterly bond that I got to share with my sisters being three of the same gender.

That slight challenge could have been overcome once I found out I was having identical twins, as having two girls would mean they could be instant best friends!

But one thing I couldn't shake was the nervousness about parenting girls.

I have only ever known how to be a boy mum. It's chaotic and wild and emotional, but I feel like it's something I've become quite good at. So having girls felt really intimidating to me.

So here I was on the morning of my gender reveal, really quite OK with both possibilities. Turns out the cake was blue, so the 'boy mum' badge has been reinforced.

Excitement and fear took over me in the moment. The excitement of having two little twin boys, and the fear of having four boys under five – guaranteed chaos.

Although, there was one other emotion, and that was slight sadness.

I am sad I'm never going to be able to experience having a daughter. Sad I won't be challenged in that way. I won't be able to teach her the lessons I've learnt as a girl in this world. I won't be able to raid the extensive girls section in Zara kids.

I think it's healthy to admit I am a little sad… but to say I am disappointed isn't quite the right way to put it. At least for me, as I know all mums can feel differently about this topic.

I'm a big believer that we are only given experiences in life that were made for us.

And being able to raise four boys, while it will no doubt be a wild time, is going to be the experience of a lifetime.

Plus the full glam, fashion and pamper budget is now allocated to me and only me, which is quite the bonus!
