We all know how tough it can be to find the perfect baby name.

While some people settle on a name before their child is born, others prefer to wait until after their child arrives to find a name that suits, and some even end up changing their child's name after experiencing baby name regret.

But one new mum's desire to find the perfect name for her daughter has resulted in her trying out a staggering 14 names – if you count all the nickname derivatives – before finally settling on what she says is the 'perfect' name for her daughter.

The woman, called Kate, took to TikTok this week to explain her decision and reveal all the names they tried calling their daughter, who is now five months old, before finally settling on 'the one'.

"My baby is five months old and we're about to change her name," Kate began.

"Do you remember a couple of months ago, I made a video saying we named her Margaret after my husband's grandma because we were panicked because they said 'You have an hour to pick your baby's name. We are going to come and pick up the paperwork, you better pick, pick, pick, pick, pick'."

The new mum said that at the time they didn't have any idea what they wanted to name her.

Kate said she chose her first name in a panic while still in hospital.  TikTok/@young.ster_

"So we picked Margaret because we thought, family name, it'll grow on us, you can't go wrong with a family name, other kids have family names, there's lots of nicknames for Margaret.

"So we're like, 'Surely something will stick. We'll find something that we like'. Well, we didn't."

Kate said they first changed their daughter's name to Madeline, but after calling her that "for a couple of days" they decided there were "too many Madelines" and a lot of people were commenting that "I'm a Maddie and I hate it".

Next, she said they settled on Winona, "but that didn't really suit her", so they moved on to Felicity, which they loved.

"And we were gonna change it and we went and got the paperwork to send it off, and at the last minute I was like, 'I don't know'," adding she "felt strongly" about going back to their first choice and "finding a nickname for Margaret that we like".

"So we called her Daisy, and we liked that for a little bit, but it kind of got old and it didn't stick," she said.

Next came Maggie, Margo, Midge, Molly, Gemma, Emma, Emmy and MJ – her middle name is Joan.

"We've tried everything," she said, adding they kept coming back to the "nickname thing", and made the mistake of asking "other people their opinions on nicknames" but still "couldn't find anything that stuck".

"Nothing suited her," Kate said.

"Well today we finally agreed, after months and months and months, that her name is Loralai.

"Yes, I got it from Gilmore Girls. So what?

"We love it and we look at her like, 'This is a Rory'."

Rory Gilmore is the daughter of Loralai, both characters in the beloved series.

"It fits her, it's perfect.

"So I sent off the paperwork. Final answer: she is Loralai."

In the US, where Kate is from, name regret is often complicated by the fact some states have very short time periods to register a birth.

California State law requires all births to be registered within 10 days, while in Florida, you have just five days.

In other states, such as Hawaii, the birth must be registered before you leave hospital, hence why some parents end up picking a name they regret.

A number of social media users and celebrities have spoken about having to legally change their child's name, including one of the more famous incidents, when Kylie Jenner announced her son's name was Wolf, before changing her mind.

She waited a year to change his name legally to Aire.

But is Loralai the final name for Kate? Many of her followers were not convinced, with Kate previously taking to TikTok to announce other final name choices. She even promised back in August that Daisy was their final pick.

"Sooo same time next month?" asked one follower.

"It's rage bait at this point," wrote another.

Personally, I was wondering if she thought her daughter was "a Rory", why she didn't call her that.

Time will tell if this is really the end of the saga.
