'Want them to be disrespectful': Dax Shepard defends his kids' 'unruly' behaviour

Dax Shepard has revealed his kids will often "talk back" and "are not respectful", but it's not something he wants to change.

On a recent episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, the actor, who lives with wife Kristen Bell and their kids in Nashville, Tennessee, recalled the moment a friend of his was shocked by the behaviour of his daughters, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10.

"They're kind of shook with how our daughters will talk back to us or anybody because it's very un-Southern, right?" Shepard told guest Reese Witherspoon, who grew up in Nashville.

The friend proceeded to tell Shepard his kids "will let rip", have "no respect" and are "a little entitled".

"And I said, 'You're dead right. They do talk back and they are not respectful'," he recalled.

Shepard noted he can understand why that might seem "completely unruly" but explained it's a price he is willing to pay to raise strong-willed daughters.

"I want you to know what I'm prioritising which is when they're 19 and their boss is a f--king creep, I want them to talk back," he told Witherspoon.

"I want them to be disrespectful, I want them to always advocate for themselves whether I think they're right or wrong," he continued.

"I'm willing to deal with this thing that is embarrassing at a restaurant for y'all but I can deal with it, I can handle that because I want this other thing for them as women."

Earlier in the 90-minute-long chat, Witherspoon gave her own advice for parenting young girls.

"It's so, so important what you say to your daughters," she said.

"You write on their mind with a Sharpie. It's not a dry-erase board.

"So what you give them – the tools of self-confidence, self-worth, what they're looking for in a partner, what they want in their 20s versus their 30s – You get a lot of that from your dad."

The comments come after Shepard and Bell recently found themselves in hot water for what has been called a "tone deaf and offensive" anniversary post.

Bell was criticised over a tribute to her husband to Instagram in which she appeared to joke about husbands murdering their wives.

"Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: 'I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I'm heavily incentivised to kill you, I never would'."

The timing of the post coincided with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the US and angered many fans for being "insensitive".

The controversial post is currently still up on Bell's Instagram page but comments are limited.
