The top 10 most popular boys and girls names in New South Wales in 2023
Picking a name for your child is one of the most important and stressful things you'll ever do as a parent.
In 2023 there was a shift in the most popular baby names for girls and boys in New South Wales.
A new name has topped the girls' list for the first time ever.
"No matter their name, I congratulate all families who welcomed a newborn in 2023, each child is precious," said Theresa Fairman, Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

9. Matilda - tied for equal ninth
Tying in at ninth spot is Matilda, which dropped a couple of places from the previous year.
The children's book heroine Matilda has been one factor in its rise to popularity over the past 15 years and also feels like one of those truly Aussie names.
9. Sophia
This name saw a jump in popularity, squeezing into the top 10 for 2023.
Last year it ranked in position 24.
8. Evelyn
Another name which made a jump up the ladder is Evelyn.
While it may be a popular choice for girls right now, in the 17th century it was given more often to boys – as a surname originally derived from the Norman given name Aveline.
7. Lily
A new addition into the top 10 most popular names in 2023 is Lily.
Last year Lily came in at number 11 and has broken through, rising four spaces to cement a spot in the top names.
According to Name Berry Lily is the most popular of the popular delicate century-old flower names now making a return to popularity with parents.
6. Ava
Ava has remained at number six on the list again this year.
The name has been a popular one for baby girls over the last 20 years and has become a modern classic name.
5. Charlotte
Charlotte, which was the most popular girls name for 2022, fell four positions to fifth in 2023.
4. Mia
Taking a step up the ladder, Mia moved from fifth place in 2022 to fourth in 2023.
Mia is a shortened version of the name Maria, which is derived from the Hebrew name Miryam.
3. Olivia
Olivia, which has stayed at the top end of the list since 2011, came in at number three.
The name Olivia is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "olive tree" and ranks highly throughout the world as a popular girls name according to Name Berry.
1. Amelia - tied for equal first
Amelia came in at equal first in 2023.
This name and the top ranking name, which is only separated by four registered births, were previouslytied when the preliminary top 10 was released in January according to Births, Deaths and Marriages New South Wales.
