Tennis star Eugenie Bouchard's unusual connection to the Royal Family

Eugenie Bouchard may not be in line to the British throne, but the Canadian tennis star boasts an unusual connection to the royal family

You see, around the time Eugenie and her three siblings were born, her parents had... well, let's just say a rather strong interest in all things royal. 

As a result, their names read like a who's who of the monarchy.

Let's start with the eldest Bouchard siblings: Eugenie, 24, has a fraternal twin sister named Beatrice. Yep, really.

It's no coincidence, either; the athlete has confirmed many times that she and her sister were named after the two daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York.

Eugenie, who is #79 in the world's women's singles tennis ranking, has another sister named Charlotte, after Princess Caroline of Monaco's daughter Charlotte Casiraghi.

The youngest of the family, William, is named for the Duke of Cambridge.

Whenever the topic of the royal-inspired names is raised in interviews, Eugenie is quick to point out her mother is a "closet royalist" and a "royal nut."

"First off, I should say it’s a parental interest in royalty, probably mostly my mother. She named us, so I wasn’t really aware of what was going on at that time," she told the Daily Mail in 2014.

"I can be a princess, though," she added. "I can be moody in the morning and my fitness trainer carries my tennis bag around."

Though she's yet to meet her royal namesake properly, Eugenie—who commonly goes by the nickname "Genie"—played the Wimbledon 2014 final in front of the Princess of York.

“I’m looking forward to maybe meeting one day the girl I was named after. That would be pretty cool," she remarked earlier in the tournament.

Following her loss in the final, which Princess Eugenie attended with now-husband Jack Brooksbank, the athlete jokingly apologised for not giving the royal a win to cheer on.

"I'm very happy that she came out. Disappointed I couldn't put on a better show for her," she told reporters.

The Australian Open crowd is sadly lacking in princesses, but Eugenie faced the tennis equivalent of royalty on Thursday night when she took on Serena Williams, who won the match in two sets.
