Swimming 'golden' couple Emily Seebohm and Mitch Larkin separate

Two of the nation's best swimmers have split after two years of dating.

Golden couple Emily Seebohm and Mitch Larkin have ended their relationship just days before a scheduled fundraising event for the Great Barrier Reef.

The 26-year-old confirmed the split on her Instagram account.

"I would like to take this opportunity before more speculation and rumours are spread," Seebohm wrote.

"Due to current events that have occurred, Mitch Larkin and I have decided to end our relationship and go our seperate [sic] ways.

"As always I appreciate your support and ask for your understanding and privacy on this matter."

It's unclear what "current events" Seebohm was referring to in the post.

All traces of Larkin appear to have been wiped from her Instagram page expect for a photo of pair, posing alongside Sam and Rachel Thaiday and model Erin Holland, ahead of an event in Queensland.

Seebohm and Larkin walked the runway for the Treasury Brisbane’s ICON fashion series on Thursday night.

He has not commented publicly on the break-up.

Next week, they are set to take part in the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef expedition, to raise awareness of the impact of climate change and pollution on marine life.

Seebohm and Larkin began dating in 2015, having met through the Brisbane swimming circle.

Last year they bought a house together in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra.

Nine sports journalist Sam Squires commented "sending love" on Seebohm's post, while retired champion Giaan Rooney added a broken heart emoji.
