Mum's warning to others after son, three, drowned in backyard

Influencer Emilie Kiser has taken to social media with some advice for other parents following the loss of her three-year-old son, Trigg.

The grieving mum shared some words of wisdom six months after her toddler accidentally drowned in their backyard pool, a tragedy she called one of "the worst moments of my entire life".

While the family's nightmare took place in Chandler, Arizona, Kiser's words were just as poignant for Australian families.

She hoped her words might "save families from the pain of losing a child to a preventable accident, such as drowning".

In a lengthy emotional statement posted to Instagram, Kiser reminded parents to "watch your children at all times", adding that "no amount of supervision is too much or 'helicopter parenting'".

She urged parents to enrol kids in swimming classes and asked people to ensure they have a proper physical barrier like a fence around their pool.

In Australia pool fences are required by law, with different states having different standards and requirements.

"Please take every precaution possible around water with your children," Kiser wrote.

"Drowning is quick and preventable."

Trigg was found unresponsive in the water and police said he was in there for about seven minutes.

Authorities said there was no fence around the pool, which was usually closed with a netting that had been removed for a scheduled cleaning set to take place the next day.

Kiser took "full accountability" for her son's death, in a statement shared online in August, saying "one of the hardest lessons I carry is that a permanent pool fence could have saved his life".

Now, she is looking to hold onto the memory of her son and hope it can serve as a warning for others.

Kiser said she felt "broken every day that he's not here".

"I hope I can spread even an ounce of the joy he gifted to us and everyone he crossed paths with each day," she said.
