Kamala Harris' stepdaughter Ella Emhoff makes her Paris Fashion Week debut

Five months after the US inauguration turned her into an overnight fashion icon, 'second daughter' Ella Emhoff has hit another milestone in her modelling career.

The step-daughter of US vice-president Kamala Harris made her debut at Paris Fashion Week, walking in Balenciaga's haute couture show on Wednesday.

Emhoff, 22, strode down the runway in an oversized black pantsuit teamed with a coat, her hair slicked back and glasses on.

Sharing footage from the "truly amazing" experience on Instagram, she wrote, "thank you/congrats to @demnagvasalia and the whole balenciaga team".

Commenters praised the design school graduate for her turn on the catwalk, with designer Marc Jacobs simply calling it "perfection".

Emhoff, the daughter of Harris' husband Douglas Emhoff, landed a contract with prestigious modelling agency IMG days after the inauguration on January 21.

She turned heads when she arrived at Washington DC's Capitol building in a striking outfit by Miu Miu and Batsheva, including a long brown plaid coat with orange beading.

Since then, Emhoff has appeared in New York Fashion Week and graduated from the Parsons School of Design, where her focus was textiles.

Before she was catapulted onto the global stage during the US election, Emhoff shared her flair for fashion on Instagram, showcasing her own colourful knitwear designs.

Although the news of Emhoff's modelling contract emerged after Biden and Harris were sworn in to office, she had been on IMG's radar for a while before the event.

Ivan Bart, the agency's president, first noticed the 22-year-old's distinctive style during the presidential primary votes and got in contact to discuss the possibility of her signing to IMG's books.

"I was pretty surprised when everything with IMG was happening because when I was younger, I never saw that as being part of my timeline," Emhoff told the New York Times.

"As someone who, like a lot of young girls out there, had self-confidence issues, it is intimidating and scary to go into this world that is hyper-focused on you and the body."

Judging by her slick runway appearance at Paris Fashion Week, any doubt over her modelling credentials has melted away.
