Edinburgh Zoo under fire for 'pitting women against each other' with announcement of pygmy hippo calf Haggis

Across the globe, four words have enraged feminists, hippo enthusiasts and those who are chronically online.

A few months ago, the world fell in love with Moo Deng, a baby pygmy hippo born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand.

The internet couldn't get enough of watching Moo Deng as she grew bigger and bigger each day, but now, it seems there's a new hippo on the block.

"Moo Deng? Who Deng?" wrote Edinburgh Zoo on X (formerly Twitter) announcing the birth of their new pygmy hippo calf, Haggis.

Almost immediately, the team behind the post received backlash online for unnecessarily pitting two women against each other.

"Ya'll are bitches putting moo deng down like that in Haggis' name," wrote one user on X."They would not speak about each other like this."

Another asked, "Why are we pitting women against each other. Moo Deng and Haggis can live in the same space."

It wasn't long before the team at Edinburgh Zoo realised their grave mistake, releasing a "notes app apology" to all the scorned hippo advocates out there.

"We were wrong to pit Haggis and Moo Deng against each other," they wrote.

"There is space in this world for two beautiful pygmy hippo divas and we should celebrate them all. Sorry to Moo Deng. let's work it out on the remix."

If you're confused about what exactly is going on with that apology, it seems Edinburgh Zoo has basically brought in their chronically online Gen Z intern to clean up the mess presumably made by the Millennial social media manager – by accident, of course.

Thankfully, it seems the pop culture packed apology has satisfied the appetites of all those angered by the anti-feminist, hippo shaming, original post.

Judging by the reactions online, fans are now excited to see Moo Deng and Haggis live in harmony. Just two "pygmy hippo divas" killing it in a world designed to watch them fall.

While the pair of gorgeous girls will likely never meet, we can take pride in the fact we, as a collective internet movement, stood up for what was right – a world in which Moo Deng and Haggis can live happily in harmony.

Who knows, maybe the teams at Edinburgh Zoo and Khao Kheow Open Zoo will let them say hey on Facetime or something.
