Disabled mum left broke after 10-year-old son spent thousands on Fortnite

An online video game has left a disabled single mother with "no money" after her 10-year-old son spent more than £1,000 (AU$1,784) playing Fortnite.

According to Cleo Duckett, from Wales, her son Jayden-Lee used her bank card to spend £1,193.25 (AU$2,129.17) on the popular video game.

The mother-of-two, who is bound to a wheelchair due to polio, only learned she was broke when she checked her bank balance on Friday night.

"I only found out about it all when I went to use the cash machine and there was only £8 left in my account," Duckett told the MailOnline.

"My son started crying and admitted everything that he had done.

"He had used my bank card behind my back, typed my details into his Xbox and bought lots of games on Fortnite.

The single parent receives around £700 (AU$1,251) a month in benefits and has been forced to dip into her son's savings until she is paid her next benefit payment on Thursday.

"I've got to survive five days with no money. It's scary," she said.

"I've got to buy food and pay for electric and gas and I've been left to manage on my own."

Fortnite is a hugely popular online platform developed by Epic Games. 

The game is set in 'contemporary Earth' where the sudden appearance of a worldwide storm causes majority of the world's population to disappear, and zombie-like creatures to rise and attack survivors.

Players connect with friends online to create support teams and 'Microtransations' can be used as in-game currency to upgrade their arsenal.

Duckett claimed she has gone £245 (AU$438) into her overdraft and that the bank is "refusing to help me".

"They said my boy is my responsibility and I am responsible for his actions," Cleo said.

"I'm not a criminal. I haven't stolen the money or spent it on games for myself.

"I've been with the bank for more than 20 years and they're just not helping me at all."

The distraught mother has also contacted the game makers of Fortnite but is yet to receive a response.

"I'll probably never see that money again," she confessed.

"My boy didn't understand what he was doing - he's only 10.

"He didn't understand that it was real money. He thought he was only getting credits."
