The cosmetic surgery trend we'll be seeing in 2022: 'Already booked through to April'

2022 is a chance to have a fresh start for many of us who have been feeling less than great of late.

For some, that fresh start might come in the form of healthier food choices and new exercise regimens. For others, it comes in the form of cosmetic tweaks.

In past years, breast enhancements and butt lifts have been popular cosmetic procedures — but this year, the trend is for "facial rejuvenation and glamorisation".

Dr Jack Zoumaras, a Specialist Plastic Surgeon and the current Chairman of the NSW state chapter of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, has seen a flood of clients booking in for procedures.

"We are already booked through to April 2022 with face procedures," he says.

"As a facelift specialist plastic surgeon, the patients I see are all focused on facial rejuvenation and glamorisation. Rejuvenation is anti ageing surgery, where as glamorisation is surgery to improve the way you look.

"Such procedures include fox eye, cat eye surgery or cheek or chin implants and creating a supra tip break or ski slip on the nose."

Removing "fat bags" from under the eyes is another popular choice, as well as requests to remove "large humps on the nose, Dr Zoumaras says. Then there are requests for neck lifts, a previously neglected area when it came to anti-ageing procedures.

Dr Zoumaras says these trends in Australia match what is being seen in America, where colleagues are reporting high volumes of facial surgery requests.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic impacting procedures, many patients have been moving their procedures forward to get ahead of any future lockdowns.

"Traditionally, patients wanted office-based, minimal downtime procedures, but the advent of COVID-19 all over the world has made the downtime a non-factor any more," Dr Zoumaras explains.

"Patients are choosing to undergo more extensive facial procedures, and patients are travelling less and have more discretionary spending towards plastic surgery."

Dr Zoumaras says from a surgeon's point of view, ageing of the face is "complex" as it involves the ageing of the skin, descent of fat and laxity on the muscle and ligaments.

Patients are urged to check the credentials of medical professionals they consult for procedures through the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
