Coronavirus scientist's unusual vaccine videos go viral

A scientist's posts about her work on a coronavirus vaccine are going viral on social media site TikTok.

Dr Anna Blakney, a research fellow, is offering a unique insight into her work at a London University on the video sharing platform.

She has clocked up almost 200,000 followers with her posts, which offer a view of science that's far from the usual stuffy image.

One of her posts, of her pretending to 'spill' the vaccine, has had more than 14m views.

Her videos also include simple explanations about herd immunity, coronavirus tests and how vaccines work.

"It's a brilliant way to show younger people what we're doing in the lab and explain how vaccines work," she told Grazia.

"The response has been insane.

"I recently made a joke video of me knocking over a tube of 'the vaccine' and it spilling everywhere.

"I've loved seeing the conversations my TikTok videos are provoking... a new demographic is engaging with science."

Blakney is part of Team Halo, a UN plan which aims to connect the public to scientists.

She said she's also heard from parents whose kids now want to be scientists.

She added scientists are not racing against each other for a vaccine, but are working together.
