David Campbell's 'life changing choice' coming out of coronavirus lockdown

As restrictions lift for the majority of us (finally) we can all thank goodness schools are back and pubs and clubs are opening again.

So many of us have used time in isolation to try something we never had time to do. Some started planting vegetables, some baked sourdough, others found their inner Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift and bought a guitar or ukulele.

My wife went the vegetable route early on, but I held out to the very last minute of COVID-19 lockdown to finally decide what my life changing choice would be.

I joined the bike riding brigade this week.

As much as I hate to admit it, I am getting older and, try as I may, the coronavirus calories have been knocking on my door.

Suits were tightening, pants were straining and I was noticing stairs were getting tougher.

I used to love riding to high school when I was a kid. Back in my day we didn't need helmets and there was none of these fancy bike lanes you have nowadays.

Back in the neon soaked 80's you had two choice of bikes; A cool BMX like Nicole Kidman, or one which had 10 gears.

I loved the freedom and thought I might be able to relive those glorious days of the wind in my hair as I rode to work. Of course back then I had a mullet, and the helmet would have ruined my look.

So I went to my local bike shop and while I had caught the back end of the bike sale boom, I was still overwhelmed by the choice.

You can have road, hybrid, mountain, electric, commuting, a fixie, triathlon the classic BMX or unicycle.

I got a nice, regular, Dad-goes-to-work bicycle.

Look, I am no Tony Abbott. I definitely don't want to be a Mamil. I just wanted to dress slightly normal and get to work and home. Maybe race the kids on the weekend.

So please watch when you open your doors because I am back on the roads, out there, somewhere... fighting my age and expanding waistline.
