TV judge slams celebs as 'modern Marie Antoinettes' during lockdown

A TV judge has called celebrities "modern Marie Antoinettes" for their attitudes during the coronavirus pandemic, while also praising the royal family for their response to the crisis.

Judge Rob Rinder appeared on ITV's This Morning to discuss how high-profile personalities have responded to the global pandemic and was quick to chastise celebrities for their out-of-touch approaches.

Pointing out that most celebrities are self-isolating in luxury homes and still have access to anything they could desire, Rinder said that it's all about how A-listers present themselves at a time like this.

"The celebrities in large brackets that have talent that are choosing to entertain us that's completely and utterly marvellous," he began.

"If you don't have that talent, I simply don't understand why you think it's a helpful contribution to take selfies behind your self-secluded moat, I don't get it at all."

Celebs like John Krasinski have started web series during isolation, which Rinder seemed supportive of, but others have shared glimpses into their luxe private lives.

He pointed to the star-studded video Gal Gadot shared of herself and a series of celebrities singing John Lennon's 'Imagine', which Rinder described as a "grotesque" move during a global crisis.

"Words can't overstate how grotesque I thought it was in a time when people need help there she was with her A-list friends self-secluding no doubt with staff and that sort of thing," Rinder said.

"As families are just about confronting the worst, these people are modern-day Marie Antoinette's and things didn't go well for her in the end."

Instead the TV judge encourages celebrities and other high-profile personalities to donate to charities in need during the pandemic, adding that they shouldn't feel the need to make a big show of their contributions.

He also praised the royal family for their work during the crisis, pointing out that senior royals like Prince William and Kate Middleton have been in the public eye "doing precisely what royals should do".

The Cambridges, along with a series of other royal family members, have supported UK charities through the pandemic, donating time and money to boost coronavirus relief efforts.
