Coles has apologised to a customer who shared his frustration online after being forced to use the self-service checkout during a recent shopping trip.

Nick Stetic posted about the experience to the supermarket chain's official Facebook page.

"You know what blows chunks?" he said. "Doing a $260 grocery shop and having to do it yourself. If you can't afford staff then your business model is stuffed!"

He shared these thoughts next to a photo of the self-checkout out he was using, the grand total coming to $258.25.

Some of his social media followers accused him of lying about there being no manned checkouts.

"I don't believe no manned tills were open. If you prefer them queue for one like our fools did The Queen," one wrote.

"Get a karen haircut and scream for the manager, that's more effective," added another unsympathetic commenter.

"Blows chunks is slang for being sick, which is how you people make me feel whenever you bang on about these same pathetic complaints instead of getting with the times and accepting that self service is the norm now," another said.

At this point, Stetic responds: "For all you keyboard warriors, this is the checkout in question and there were NO staffed checkouts."

One commenter recalled: "You know it wasn't that long ago when you had to go to the shop and give the cashier your shopping list and they got your items for you."

Another suggested he shop online to avoid this inconvenience, while another comment read: "Do they do the scan as you shop option? If so do that as it's much easier. I like self scan as I'm socially awkward, but in fairness I wouldn't want to scan 200+ quids worth of shopping either."

Coles Australia responded to Stetic's complaint, commenting: "Hi Nick. Thanks for getting in touch. We're sorry to learn of the delays at the checkouts in our store and apologise for the frustration this has caused.

Unsatisfied, Stetic responded: "Coles waffle waffle waffle waffle… but thanks for the reply."
