Chelsea Clinton talks Ivanka Trump friendship, admits they haven't spoken 'in a long time'

Theirs appeared to be a friendship that transcended the political divide, but Chelsea Clinton has admitted the bitter 2016 election campaign between her Democrat mother, Hillary Clinton and Republican President Trump has taken its toll on her closeness with his daughter, Ivanka Trump.

Appearing onThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the former first daughter said the pair had "not spoken… in a long time".

Clinton, who was 13 when her father Bill was elected President in 1993, famously defended Ivanka Trump's brother, Barron from negative press coverage following his father's inauguration. She also joined forces with Ivanka on Twitter to defend Malia Obama when she was pictured smoking and kissing a fellow student on campus at Harvard University.

But since then their friendship appears to have soured.

"It’s clear that she has supported policies and decisions that I don’t agree with," she said on the show last night. "I've been very vocal about my opposition to President Trump."

She said she had been initially hopeful the pair would find common ground.

"I certainly am just really sad that we’re at a point in time … where we have a president who has such callous disregard for thoughtful, coherent, expert-advised foreign policy," she said.

"[It] is something I would hope, regardless of where we sit on the political spectrum, we would agree on."

These comments are at odds with an interview Chelsea gave before the 2016 Presidential campaign.

In 2015, she told Cosmopolitan.com: "I am absolutely friends with Ivanka and I am grateful for her friendship. And I'm always going to believe, because this is how my parents raised me, that friendship is more important than politics."

Ivanka was also once a supporter of Hillary Clinton.

In 2007, long before her own father was in the race to become president, she donated $1,300 to Clinton's campaign.

Now, both Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner work as senior advisors to President Trump.

She has an office in the West Wing, and has reportedly angered other White House aides by flitting between playing confidante to the President and his daughter when it suits.

The mum-of-three recently attended the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea on behalf of her father's administration.

Kushner has recently had his security clearance downgraded from 'Top Secret' to 'Secret', meaning he's unable to access highly classified foreign policy documents.
