Carrie Johnson felt Downing Street was "like a prison" and a "pressure cooker", a source has claimed.

The wife of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was unable to come and go without the fear of being photographed with her young family, The Telegraph UK reports.

Carrie felt trapped while living at Number 10 with her children, a source close to the prime minister said.

"Downing Street is like a prison," an insider told The Telegraph.

"The garden is shared with the staff and you can't move outside the gates without people following you or taking pictures. That is a nightmare."

"Downing Street was a pressure cooker," the source added.

The Johnsons are now looking for a new home after the politician resigned as prime minister.

They have since relocated to the prime minister's country home Chequers until they can find somewhere else to live.

Last week, Carrie was spotted outside Number 10 with Romy in a baby carrier as Boris delivered a farewell speech after announcing his resignation.

Carrie, a former staffer of the Conservative Party MP, was seen clapping and cheering her husband from the side as he spoke to the media.

A friend told the publication there was no chance Carrie, the Conservative Party's former head of communications, would resume her own political career when her husband leaves office.
