'Excessive and ridiculous': Bride and groom's unusual catering request for guests

Gabrielle Oehlmann

A bride and groom have decided to host their wedding potluck style, asking their guests to help out by buying and preparing the food for their upcoming nuptials.

Taking to the popular Wedding Shaming Reddit forum, a user explained that their friend was planning a wedding and hoped to host it at a "resort they frequent" in an "affluent area but also in the middle of nowhere" – roughly a four-hour drive from where most of the guests live.

Hosting it at the resort would mean booking the entire place for a minimum three-night stay with the cheapest accommodation being $300 a night.

They added that the venue had "no restaurant on sight and the closest town is about an hour away."

So to address the catering problem, the bride and groom hoped to ask their guests to pitch in.

"So the plan/thought is that everyone group cooks together for the three days and also collectively make the food for the wedding," the user explained.

They were not sold on the idea and shared their concerns with the couple.

"I told them I felt like it was a lot to expect people to pay that kind of money, stay somewhere for three days and also fully stock kitchens and be expected to make meals the entire time."

But the couple didn't agree.

"They said that if people weren't up for that they didn't deserve to be at the wedding," the person on Reddit explained.

"I let them know I would not be up for that and worry others would not either but they disagree."

The Reddit user added that the couple would also "expect wedding gifts too but seeing as the least amount of money someone would spend to attend this wedding would be $1200 between the cabin, food and [petrol] that's more than a gift."

"It seems so excessive and ridiculous to ask of 40 to 60 people."

Several people took to the comment section sharing that they agreed with the original poster.

"If they can't provide everything – lodging and catering – they shouldn't have a wedding out in the middle of nowhere," one user commented.

"If I'm paying $300+ a night I ain't cooking for a crowd. No thank you! You are right and you won't be the only one who isn't OK with this," another shared.

One user had a slightly different take but agreed that the expectation was a lot.

"The thing is everyone is entitled to plan a wedding they want," they wrote.

"The shame is holding it against people if they decide that they won't/ can't [manage] the time, energy or money that is required of them to participate."
