'It was touch and go': Barack and Michelle Obama make joke about divorce rumours in podcast episode

In a "moment everyone's been waiting for" Barack Obama made an appearance on his wife and brother-in-law's podcast, IMO.

After being introduced by Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, the former US president walked onto their set and hugged his wife, with Robinson mocking shock at the sight.

"Wait, you guys like each other?!" he quipped.

It prompted Barack to continue the joke as he took his seat.

"She took me back!," the 63-year-old said with a cheeky grin. "It was touch and go for a while."

Michelle, while laughing at the bit between her husband and her brother, also warned them both, saying "don't start".

The former first lady, 61, agreed it was "nice to be in the same room" as her husband, citing critics who suggest conflict between the couple of over 30 years.

"When we aren't, folks think we're divorced," she said.

After the jokes subsided, Michelle took a moment to seriously address the divorce rumours that have been surrounding the couple since January, when Barack attended both former US president Jimmy Carter's funeral and US President Donald Trump's inauguration solo.

"There hasn't been one moment in our marriage where I have thought about quitting my man," Michelle said.

"We've had some really hard times and we've had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures and I've become a better person because of the man I'm married to."

Barack admitted her words made him emotional and said he often tunes out the noise and speculation.

The couple, who have two daughters - Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24 - also spoke about parenting as a team and how their shared values helped raise their kids.

Michelle then doubled down on her comments, taking to social media to offer another comment on the "rumour mill".

"I've said this before, but it's worth reiterating today, my home is my family. My home is Barack," she captioned a clip of her comments on the podcast.

Michelle and Barack have previously been open about their relationship struggles.

The mother-of-two even spoke publicly in an interview with Oprah Winfrey about the pair going to marriage counselling in the years since their 1992 wedding.

She's also been frank about their fertility struggles before welcoming their daughters.
