Christmas advertisement reduces viewers to tears

UK department store John Lewis has released its 2019 Christmas advert and immediately brought many viewers to tears.

The advertisement centres around a dragon, dubbed "Excitable Edgar" who can't help but get over excited and overwhelmed, resulting in him breathing fire. Consequently the little dragon melts snow, ice-skating rinks and sets numerous Christmas decorations on fire (including the village's big Christmas Tree).

Edgar is seen being shunned by villagers for his misdemeanours, before he shuts himself away in his house, refusing to come out in case he ruins the festivities. Through the help of a little girl in the village though, he redeems himself by lighting up a Christmas pudding at a Christmas feast.

Apparently not everyone found it heartwarming, with people taking to Twitter to discuss their thoughts after it was released online.

"Absolutely love Edgar," one user wrote, although her child thought otherwise, convinced he had destroyed a popular character from the Disney film Frozen.

"Unfortunately my two year old is distraught that Edgar melted Olaf."

The John Lewis Twitter account replied saying the dragon "was only trying to help Olaf" and that he'll have a word with Edgar, adding "or Elsa he will be sent to the naughty corner".

"This is too SAD," a another user tweeted. "The happy ending doesn't make up for the rest of it being so sad. Poor Edgar."

Although some weren't thrilled with the advert, there were plenty who were feeling the Christmas spirit.

"Awww such a cute advert," a fan wrote.

"Enough to make a grown man cry," declared another.
