Tiny acrobatics in Planet Earth II's harvest mouse vs owl scene

Who needs Cirque du Soleil when you can watch a mouse with moves like this?

This little squeaker, a harvest mouse from Norfolk in the UK, has some serious acrobatic skills - enough to make her a BBC star.

She features in the latest teaser trailer for Planet Earth II, for a forthcoming episode about the planet's grasslands.

Her tricks aren't just for tricks (or featuring in a frenzy of retweeting) – these somersaults are a matter of life and death.

After catching the eye of an owl who eats mice like her for breakfast (or any time of the day really – mice are a timeless snack).

What ensues is a few very tense moments of slow motion, ending with the mouse dropping out of the owl's grasp just in time, like a secret agent jumping from a helicopter seconds before it explodes.

Her daring escape was made possible thanks to her tail David Attenborough tells us.

“A prehensile tail acts like a fifth limb, so she’s as agile as a monkey travelling around in a tree," he says.

The amazing footage was captured on a custom-designed macro crane-arm which meant the crew could "make the camera go where a cameraman couldn't".

This whizzbang camera meant the Planet Earth II crew could capture new-born mice in their little "tree house" nursery.

The Grasslands episode will drop in the UK on Sunday night – our Monday morning – and is expected to be just as riveting as the past four episodes.
