VIDEO: News presenter's mispronunciation of Irish leader's name is funny but relatable

You've really got to feel for this poor news presenter.

Sky News anchor Claudia-Liza Armah was live on air as she was introducing Irish leader Leo Varadkar, who was addressing the media about Hurricane Ophelia.

But the sounds that came out of her mouth were a little confusing.

Because in Ireland the pollie in the top job isn't called a prime minister or head of government, but a Taoiseach.

Just try to pronounce it now.

Yeah, that's not easy, hey?

So for us simple-word-using, lingo-slinging Aussies, it was pretty bloody confusing watching this clip.

It honestly sounded as if she'd had one too many red cordials and was talking gibberish.

And we weren't the only ones who thought that.

Video of the unfortunate pronunciation quickly went viral on Irish social media, which is saying a lot considering the country was being battered by an ex-tropical storm at the time.

Just in case you find yourself needing to introduce the head of the Irish government on national television (you never know), here's how to say the damned word.

The BBC has put together a handy little explainer for us and it seems Armah wasn't that far off.

"The established anglicisation for this word is TEE-shock (-ee as in meet, -sh as in ship)," the BBC website says.

"The anglicised pronunciation TEE-shuhck is also widely heard.

"The deputy prime minister is referred to as Tánaiste, pronounced TAW-nuhsh-tyuh (-aw as in law, -sh as in ship, -ty as in tune)."
