Facebook says 'LOL' is dead — long live LOL
LOL is internet shorthand for "I am still using uncool acronyms" (ninemsn Pickle)
RIP LOL. If you're still using the acronym to register your amusement on Facebook you might be using embarrassingly outdated slang, according to an analysis by the social giant.
Inspired by the recent New Yorker essay "Hahaha vs. Hehehe", Facebook pored over a week's worth of posts and comments made in the last week of May and found 15 percent of them included some form of laughter:
By far the most common laugh was haha, followed by emoji (such as ) then hehe. Almost no-one used LOL, which has apparently joined its cousins ROFL and LMAO on the internet slang trash pile.
Younger people are no more likely to hehe than haha, though hehe was slightly favoured by men, while women used more emoji.
