Whether or not he'll be adopted may ultimately come down to his performance, but a stray cat has scored a starring role with Rose Byrne in a revival of a classic Broadway play.

Kitten auditions were held in New York on Monday for You Can't Take It with You, and eight-week-old domestic shorthair Alfonso beat 14 other contenders for the role of stationary stationery kitty. Watch the video above to see what the audition process was like.

"The role required a kitten to remain very still on a small desk for five or six minutes and Alfonso had the perfect temperament," Sandra DeFeo, director of public relations for the Humane Society of New York, told US ABC News.

"But he's not alone. His brother Louis is starring next to him in a smaller role. He will be curled up in an open wooden box next to the desk."

The Humane Society of New York has partnered with the Broadway show to provide all the animals for the production. Audience members will be able to apply to adopt the pets after the end of the revival's run.

But Alfonso will need to be on his best behaviour if he wants to stay on stage. The plan is to replace him in a month as kittens become a little more energetic and difficult to control at 12 weeks, New York Post reported.
